"Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success." - Henry Ford

I look at the last 7 weeks as preparation for the next 2. With one more OK Red Conference match on Monday, we need to come together the way I know we can. We have to "Believe" in ourselves, these next two weeks is what the season is all about; finishing strong. The boys have been prepped, now its time to show what Grand Haven Tennis is all about.

The JV team will officially end its season on Wednesday with our match versus Zeeland East. Some members of the JV team will be asked to continue practicing with the Varsity team and compete next week Wednesday at Zeeland West. All JV players will need to turn in their US Open Tennis Bags after school on Thursday. Report to the Boys Storage Room after school to turn in your tennis bag.

Please complete the Tennis Awards Banquet form and return it to Coach Case in room 2102 prior to October 10th with payment attached. Dinner is FREE for Tennis Team members. All Tennis Team members are required to attend the Awards Banquet on Monday, October 27th above Porto Bello at 6:30 PM.

“Champions aren't made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them -- a desire, a dream, a vision.” – Muhammad Ali.

As I look at the calendar I always find it amazing how fast the fall season soars by. It was an exciting week capped off by tournament play on Saturday for both the Varsity and Junior Varsity. I want to thank all players and parents for how smooth Friday went with the Relay for Life walk. It was great for the team to show support for all those who have been touched by cancer. On Saturday, the Varsity team wore the shirts received on Friday during warm-up.

Please mark your calendars for Monday, October 27th for our team banquet above Porto Bello restaurant at 6:30 PM. All players are required to attend, please plan accordingly; parents and other family members are welcome as well. The tennis program pays for all players. A form will be handed out in the next couple weeks.

We added an event to the calendar – Zeeland East, Wednesday, October 1st – Varsity will be home and JV away. Bus departure for JV is 3:00 PM and returns around 7:30 PM.

Varsity Tennis vs. West Ottawa

Posted by casej | 24 Sep, 2008

The boys Varsity tennis team traveled to West Ottawa on Monday to meet a very strong Panther tennis team, currently ranked 4th in the state led by 8 seniors. Final score: West Ottawa 8, Grand Haven 0. The final score does not truly indicate how we played. I was very happy that they battled even when down, they did not give up or give in. As we were walking off the courts, I looked to one of my sophomore players and told them that in time we can do this in turn to them. The sophomore student replied, "No coach... we will do this to them."

OK Red Conference Record: 1-3-0
Overall Record: 2-3-0

Week of 9/15

Posted by casej | 13 Sep, 2008

Good teams are good teams because they believe in themselves at all levels, from players that are new to the sport to those that have been playing a long time. This week marks the sixth week of the season; I believe we are beginning to buy into practicing hard to attain what is needed in order to compete at a high level. We finished perhaps the busiest week for the Varsity and are entering into a busy week for the Junior Varsity.

I would like to take a moment and thank all parents for providing nutritional snacks and drinks for our matches as well as your continued support.

This Friday, all high school tennis players will be reporting to Lakeshore Middle School (LSMS) track and walk one hour for the Lakeshore Classic Relay for Life. Practice will be from 3 P.M. to 4:30 P.M. at the high school. We will then drive to LSMS and walk from 5 P.M. to 6 P.M. We need transportation to LSMS from those parents who can provide it. All players will need to be picked up at 6 P.M. at LSMS. Players will wear their tennis uniform for the walk.

Lakeshore Classic Relay for Life is being held on Friday, September 19th and Saturday, September 20th, 2008 from 3:00 PM to 12 Noon at Lakeshore Middle School track. This annual event is our community's way of helping to find a cure for cancer. There are many ways you can help with this event, please contact Betsy Sleva mikebetsy@charter.mi.net for more information or visit this website www.acsevents.org/relay/mi/grandhaven

After losing 2 matches to OK Red Conference teams the last two days it was really nice to take a win and play like I know we are capable of playing. The match started early on Thursday to accomodate our travelers from the north. We started slow but finished strong with wins at 2, 3, and 4 singles and 1, 2, and 4 doubles.

Varstiy Tennis vs Grandville

Posted by casej | 10 Sep, 2008

Our trip to Grandville on Tuesday provided us with some great learning experiences. Losing to Grandville 6-2 by way of some very close matches. 4 tie-breakers and a number of 7-5 set scores in addition to a few 6-4 set scores. The downside, we were on the outside looking in, the upside, we were in every match up until the end. Wins at 2nd and 4th doubles flights.

Week of 9/8

"The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person's determination" - Tommy Lasorda

The second week of the school year also is one of our busiest weeks of the season. Hopefully each student athlete has found a comfortable routine with school and tennis. As we start week 5 of the season I cannot overemphasis the importance of working hard in what we believe in. Our goal set at the beginning of the season was "Believe." Believe in ourselves, in our teammates, and in our coaching staff.

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit." - Aristotle.

A new school year is now upon us, as we venture into the new school year, I want to remind everyone of our attendance policy. All student-athletes must be in attendance the entire day or they may not participate.

I recently received the Grand Haven Tribune's sports preview. One correction is needed, Brenden Magnan played 1 doubles last year and is playing 2 singles this year.
